A Friend In Need

My friend Phil wants to buy the best camera he can and has been agonizing over which one to buy. 5D Mark II, 7D, 6D, 60D, T4i???? And what about all those Nikons? What to do?

Being a friend, I didn’t have to ask the most important question…”What do you want to shoot?”…I already knew what he shoots. His dilemma – he wants the best – otherwise he will have second thoughts later. But, he doesn’t want to waste money either. He is not one to rush into decisions.

1) Canon or Nikon??? (He already has one good Nikon lens.) I use Canon as do most of our friends and won’t be much help if he picks Nikon.

He did get a good offer for his lens on a trade-in so Canon is looking good.

2) Full frame or crop sensor? The 5D III is full frame…I love full frame but, knowing his needs (hobbyist and pictures of the grand-dog) I told him that he doesn’t need a full frame.

3) How many frames per second? The 7D is “rapid fire”. He doesn’t do HDR and doesn’t do sports so most cameras would fit his needs there.

4) Does weight matter? I don’t like a heavy camera on vacation but he is used to it. I use a T3i for travel. I save the 5D II for the studio/professional work on a tripod.

5) Megapixels? All the cameras have more than enough megapixels

My advice: Don’t worry about the body. Concentrate on the lens. A T4i is more than enough camera for his needs. Invest the difference in price in lenses.

My feeling is that he is going to get the Canon 6D (full frame) kit with the 24-105 L lens. B&H says it should come out this Monday and they have a $200 discount. Exactly the opposite of all of my suggestions…He’s going to love it 🙂

Thanks

I’ve spent a long time thinking about what I was going to write on this blog regarding Thanksgiving. After Hurricane Sandy and the destruction that I have seen, I certainly have lots to be thankful for. But, this is not a personal log, it is a professional one.

On a business level, I am thankful for great food stylists that make me look good, great clients that have shown repeated confidence in me and the good fortune to be able to do what I love to do most.

I am looking forward to continued growth and providing more clients with “amazing” images at a price they can afford. Thank you one and all.

Water Falls and Fall Color

Downstream at Glen Falls

Looking at Glen Falls

I just came back from a photo excursion in the Catskill Mountains in NY. Wow, it’s been a  long time since I’ve been in the Catskills. Don’t get me wrong, this was nowhere near the borscht belt.

We stayed at a great house, right on a waterfall in Round Top, NY. We had a group leader that took us to waterfalls, lakes, old hotels that are falling down, and red barns. What a great weekend with some awesome images. The food was great, the people were great, the sites were great, the weather was cold but cooperative,  and our guide Denise was outstanding. We did a lot of walking  (no-I should say hiking) up and down to the falls.

My wife came with me and she even had a good time taking photos (and she took some really great images.) The only disappointment was the fall color was mostly gone (but not completely.) All in all, a wonderful fall weekend. I’ll be editing the 26 GB of images for quite a while. Now it’s off to a hot bath.

I just posted my photos on Flickr and Facebook

And now for something a little bit different…

Thought that I would try something different for a change…let me know what you think. (3 1/2 minutes…maybe a little too long)

Pretty Enough to Eat

Veggie BurgerTomato and Fresh Mozzarella CheeseI’m sitting here chomping at the bit. I just finished a photo shoot for a great client and I can’t wait to publish these gorgeous images. The client is an organic grower in Arizona. veggie and humus sandwichI am working with a great team, their recipe developer, Tony and my food stylist, Michael. I am not doing product shots of the produce. Rather we are shooting for the recipes. (Do I detect a book coming?) One thing is for sure, this job is not easy. After two long days of shooting, we are all totally exhausted but, I would not trade this job for anything – I love doing this.

I Love Italian Food

Flatbread Pizza Margarita

Flatbread Pizza Margarita

Salmon with Grilled Broccoli

I don’t know what I enjoy more, photographing Italian food or eating it. But, when you get to do both – it’s a good day…a really good day. This week I shot for Emilio’s, an Italian Restaurant/Pizzeria in Manchester, NJ. Starting at 7am,

Fried Pork ChopI really didn’t have a chance to eat much. I did however taste the flatbread pizza margarita. Chicken PestoWOW. That was the best pizza I ever had. I can’t wait for all of these new recipes to be on the menu. Even though it’s a shlep from my house, I am definitely bringing my wife back here for dinner. Thank you Tony!

What Does a Photographer of Food Do For Fun?

Tall orange and yellow tower.

What type of flower is this?

Pink and Orange Rose

I loved the gentle colors of this rose.

Do you remember when photography was awe inspiring? When every day brought you pleasure just because you had a camera in your hand? Before having more equipment that requires a pack mule? Before there were clients, billing, expenses, insurance and worries about making someone else happy? Do you remember when you did photography just for fun?

Bee and Blossom

The bee was interested in the same flower that I was. If you know what type of flower this is, please comment.

Yellow on white Peony

The peonies were absolutely breathtaking.

Well, that’s what my trip to the New York Botanical Gardens was like. It was a beautiful day in May. Overcast, and it had just rained the day before. The Peony were fully open and the roses were starting to bloom. I had a tripod, and extension tubes and I was in heaven. The flowers were perfect, the light was perfect, the weather was perfect and I was shooting for no one but myself. I love being a food photographer but, its half photography and half business. Ah, the good old days when photography was just fun.

Winner – ITQI Superior Photo 2012

I received an e-mail from Vicki DeVico, a fellow photographer, that there is a photo contest for food photography and she knew that I photographed food. I checked it out and submitted a photo entitled “Fruit Tart”. The photo was taken for Chef George Kyrtatas of the Sweet Water Bar and Grill in Cinnaminson, NJ.

The first portion of the competition was public voting so, I asked my Facebook friends, photo club members, friends and relatives and everyone I could think of to vote for my photo…and they did. I made it into the top 15, the cutoff for the first round. Now it was up to the chefs and sommeliers of ITQI – the International Taste and Quality Institute in Belgium to select five finalists. The five selected photos will be on exhibit at A TABLE exhibition in Brussels in May. My Photo was selected and now I can say that I am an “award winning photographer.” Woo Hoo.

I just love food photography. I want to thank Chef George Kyrtatas for providing such wonderful subjects for me to photograph and allowing me to use them for the competition. I would also like to thank Lou Manna for getting me started in this field – your seminars really made the difference and got me going.
